Mental Health Moment | Apathy

Depression can look like apathy, rather than sadness. It can look like lethargy, exhaustion, and an overall depletion of the ability to physically move your body to do the things your mind is saying you need to do. Depression can look like irritability and impatience. And, yes, it can look like sadness. What it can feel like is hopelessness, and/or an overwhelming weight of unsolvable problems. Depression can feel like loneliness and isolation. Unfortunately, depression can also feel like things are never going to get better. But what depression really is, is an imbalance of the chemicals in your brain, and because this is physiological, it can be changed. Medication, and activities that release positive brain chemicals, can correct the imbalance and heal the effects of depression. Connections in your brain will improve, and strengthen, and your overall feeling of hope and optimism can return. Taking a brisk walk releases endorphins, as does genuine laughing. Listen to comedy, take in positive messages, and get some exercise. Talking things out can also help, so get one person you trust, and start sharing. Don't give up... things can change, and your happiness is worth the effort.
